Leader Training
Leader Tips
|
- If the leader has no previous training, a convenient starting point
is the Cub Scout Leader Fast Start course which may be taken online via
www.baltimorebsa.org.
- A Webelos Leader needs New Leader Essentials first and then Leader Specific
Training I and II (Webelos)
in order to be trained. Sources/resources:
- Harford District
website has a wealth of local information, including dates of Pow Wows, Days of Training, IOLS/BALOO, and
other general information.
- Harford District
Training has the District's training schedule and points of contact.
- Roundtable (2nd Monday, 7:00-8:30 PM @ Harford Technical High School:
Classes are concurrent with the monthly Roundtables but usually have to be split over several months. See
Day of Training to see how you can complete these requirements locally in one day.
- Pow Wow (1st Sat, Nov, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM, location varies): Baltimore
Area Council organizes an annual Pow Wow which consists of a full day of training. Leader training is included,
including the required courses. However, there are many other unique sessions that you won't find elsewhere.
Check Baltimore Area Council website.
The next Pow Wow will be Nov 3, 2007; they will have a web site in Aug-Sep time-frame with the course offerings;
register early to ensure you get your desired classes (some classes fill up early).
- Day of Training (Sat, Dec 2, 2006, 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM): Day of training for new scout
leaders. Includes New Leader Essentials, leader specific training, Youth Protection, and everything else new
scout leaders need (except IOLS/BALOO). POC: Steve Kilczewski, SMKILCZ@aol.com. Next offering: Feb 10, 2007.
(ORSA Corporation, 1003 Old Philadelphia Rd, Suite # 103, Aberdeen, MD, 410-273-5451)
- Youth Protection Training:
At least one adult with this training must be present during any
event requiring a local or national tour permit. This training will be offered at all
District outings that permit it. Alternatively, it may be taken
online via www.baltimorebsa.org
(you will need the serial # from your BSA membership card to ensure credit).
If you are from some other area, try www.scouting.org
and see if your area council is listed.
- Outdoor Orientation:
Before a Cub Scout Den or Pack can camp overnight, at least one
attending adult must have either the Cub Scout's Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation
(BALOO) course or the Boy Scout's Introduction to Outdoor
Leader Skills (IOLS) course. These courses will be offered Oct 6-8, 2006
and Apr 13-15, 2007 at Camp Saffron (Broad Creek Memorial Scout Reservation) near Dublin, MD.
IOLS is Friday night through Sunday morning; BALOO is Saturday morning through
Saturday afternoon. Cub Scout leaders may take IOLS, which fulfills both their
Cub Scout and future Boy Scout outdoor training in one fell swoop.
- Roundtables: Harford District has monthly
Roundtable meetings on the 2nd Monday of each month from 7:30-9:00 PM at Harford
Technical High School (next to John Archer and across from Harford
Community College). These meetings are open to all scout leaders. Please be sure
to sign in. There are handouts available on upcoming scouting events. The meeting format
varies but usually consists of announcements, followed by break-out
sessions where, for example, Webelos leaders discuss problems
or topics of interest.
- Broad Creek Events: Harford District may
offer classes like Youth Protection, Safety Afloat, and Safe Swim Defense
at Broad Creek events like Fall Camporee, Operation Icycle, and Spring Camporee.
These events run Friday through Sunday but the training is normally offered Saturday mornings.
- Pow Wow (Sat, Nov 4, 2006, 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM): Baltimore Area Council (BAC) promotes an
annual Pow Wow, which is a structured, all-day training event.
A day of classroom courses for scout leaders. Register for specific courses
in advance. Fee (which your Pack may pay) is $25 until Oct 22; $40 after that: $45 for walk-in's.
New this year, they are offering New Leaders Essentials (2 hours) followed by Leader Specific training (3 hours)
with a break for lunch. (Next Pow Wow will be Nov 3, 2007)
