Leader Tips

  • Webelos (derived from "We'll Be Loyal Scouts") is a two-year program for 4th and 5th grade boys.
    • First year Webelos (4th graders) are called Webelos I's or Junior Webelos.
    • Second year Webelos (5th graders) are called Webelos II's or Senior Webelos.
  • Webelos is a transitional or bridging program from Cub Scouting to Boy Scouting. The Webelos trail will include visiting Boy Scout Troops, learning the Boy Scout Motto and Promise, and identifying the differences between Cub Scout and Boy Scout uniforms.
  • Unlike the preceding Tiger, Wolf, and Bear programs, the Webelos leader (not the parent) must sign off on acheivements in the scout's handbook.
  • The Webelos leader should consider using parents or other adults as subject matter experts in helping the den with activity badges. This approach is similar to the function of merit badge counselors in Boy Scouts.
  • Unlike Wolf or Bear scouts, Webelos scouts may participate in overnight den camping when supervised by an adult. Den leaders and parents are expected to accompany the youth on approved trips. Rules for youth protection and safe scouting must be followed.
  • Depending on availability, a Webelos den may have a Den Chief who will help teach the den the many skills needed to move on in scouting. A Den Chief is a senior scout (Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, or Venturer) who has volunteered or been assigned to help the den.
  • Each Webelos den may elect a Denner from within their den. A Denner helps the Den leader and Den Chief at meetings and outdoor events.
