GEOLOGIST
Outings/Activities

The Webelos leader will probably be well-advised to find a geologist among teachers, leaders, Pack, or relatives; ask at Pack meetings or put a blurb in your newsletter. Perhaps someone has a mineral, rock, or fossil collection. Failing that, the leader can probably handle this after some research.
  1. Went to Maryland Geological Survey (2300 St. Paul Street; Baltimore, MD) where a geologist covered all requirements of the badge. [C. Cover, Pack 899].

  2. Visited Arundel Corporation Quarry (Havre de Grace, MD). Phone: 410-575-6587. [O. Piper, Pack 820]

  3. LaFarge Quarry (1219 Calvary Road; Churchville, MD) is also located in Harford County. Main office is in Towson (410-847-3300). Carrie Cummings, a visiting teacher from Missippi State University, created a website that is an interesting chronicle of her Spring 2002 tour of geological sites in the area. {webmaster}

  4. MaizeQuest (corn maze franchiser that includes Brad's Produce in Churchville) recently added MinerMax to their repertoire at their New Park, PA headquarters. This attraction requires youths to negotiate a maze to a mine shaft, where they are given 3- or 5-pound bags of mining rough (dirt & particles), which they take to a sluice and sift through the water to reveal their find. Material may be gemstones, emerald-rich minerals, fossils, or even arrowheads. This could be a fun intro to mining. Scouts could then research what they found and discuss at future den meetings. Group rates for 20 or more. [G. Gall, Pack 234].
