- Summer Camp - Broad Creek Memorial Scout
Reservation (near Dublin, MD) conducts 3- and 4-day resident camps throughout the summer.
They offer a special week-long camp for Webelos only the 1st week of summer vacation. Every boy must take a swim test. They are grouped by level (non-swimmer, beginner, and swimmer) for daily classes and can
ask for a re-test when ready to move up. Instructors also cover rescue techniques. [G. Gall, Pack 234]
- Boy Scout Troop: Check with a local Boy Scout Troop, especially if you are a feeder
Pack (e.g., Pack 234 is a feeder Pack for Troop 234; Pack 965 is a feeder Pack for Troop 965, etc).
Boy Scouts must pass certain swimming requirements to earn their 1st Class rank (late 1st year or early 2nd year
in Boy Scouts).
- They may have certain activities open to you. For example, Troop and Pack 234 have a swimming party
in Aug of each year while Troop 965 has an overnighter at The Arena Club (and invites the Pack), where
they can test swimmers in the pool.
- Ask a Troop to provide you an ault leader and/or Boy Scouts to work with your Webelos at a local
pool. Boy Scouts largely run the Cub Scout Day Camp and Troops are usually looking for leadership
opportunities to broaden their scouts' experience. Always contact the Scoutmaster; if he/she is
not receptive, try another Troop.
- Den Chief: A Den Chief is a Boy Scout who is assigned or volunteers to work with you
Webelos patrol on a weekly basis. Don't expect him to do it all by himself; where safety is a
consideration (e.g., testing the boys on swimming), ask him to line up extra help from his Troop.
Always keep the Scoutmaster in the loop; he will know which of his scouts have the right training
and attitude and need the leadership experience.
