The Commissioner Conference is a supplemental training opportunity for all adult volunteer Scouters in the Connecticut Yankee Council. The Commissioner Conference will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Woodbridge on November 6, 2004. Address is: 990 Racebrook Road, Woodbridge, CT.
This conference is open to all members of the Commissioner’s Staff as well as any one interested in exploring the Commissioner’s role in scouting.
Registration Fee: $18.00 per person. Fee includes handouts, certificate of attendance, morning refreshments, and a hot lunch. Late fee of $5.00 will be assessed to all applications received at the council service center after October 15, 2004.
Commissioner Basic Training as well as Roundtable Commissioner Training are multi-course selections. Please note proper time slots for scheduling.
Special Considerations: Please be sure to wear your uniform. Also, please honor our hosts’ preference of no coffee or tea in the church. Appropriate beverages will be supplied.

COURSE SELECTIONS AND DESCRIPTIONS
101-A Boy Scout Roundtable Commissioner Training – Learn tried and true Boy Scout Roundtable Planning as well as new ways to execute the Roundtable Program. Course is for new and experienced Roundtable Commissioners for Boy Scouts. This class consists of two time blocks (2 hour class).
101-B Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner Training – Cub Roundtable Commissioners are special people who must mix FUN!, KNOWLEDGE, and LEARNING into a fast paced meeting designed to help Cub Leaders deliver the Cub Scout Program. Come learn from experienced Roundtable Commissioners and share new thoughts and ideas from your cohorts. This class consists of two time blocks (2 hour class).
102 Unit Visitations and Effective Unit Service – Provides participants with insights on effective unit visits, what to look for, and how to be a help, not a hindrance. Participants will learn when and how to guide unit leaders to effective training, formal scout training programs and how to use District, Council and other resources for delivering the program to the youth.
103 Relating to and Helping Units – Establish and maintain rapport with unit leaders, unit committee members and chartered organizations. Styles of leadership; how and when they should be used will be reviewed. Participants will come away with a better understanding of the decision making process, planning process and how it is to be used by unit leaders. Hints on how and when to advise leaders.
104 Youth Protection Training – A seminar designed to provide a Commissioner with an overview of what constitutes child abuse and the responsibility of the local council and the Commissioner in preventing child abuse and reporting suspected cases. The complete Youth Protection Guidelines training is presented.
105 Chartered Organization Involvement and COR Training – This session explores the relationship between the unit and its sponsor. It discusses the BSA chartering concept and defines the role of the Commissioner in fostering the chartered partner relationships. Please note that Chartered Organization Representatives portion of the class consists of two time blocks (2 hour course).
106 Unit Commissioner Basic Training – Are you new to the Commissioner Staff or have you been around so long and things are changing!!! This afternoon long course will bring you through the “basics” of Commissioner Service – from rechartering, to unit visitations, to Cub/Scout/Venture unit structure, working with unit leaders + much, much more. This class consist of 3 time blocks (3 hour course).
107 The Commissioner and the District – Participants will review and gain insights on the interaction of the Key 3 and the Commissioners’ roles within the total venue of the District.
108 Boy Scout Program Planning – What’s the core of the Scouting Movement? PROGRAM!!!! Learn how the Unit Commissioner can aid and assist the Boy Scout Troop in the process of program planning – without taking away from the boy led/patrol concept.
109 Cub Scout Program Planning – The Unit Commissioner can have an insightful and meaningful relationship with the Pack when the Unit Commissioner can properly guide the unit leaders in Pack Program Planning. FUN WITH A PURPOSE!!!!!
110 What’s New – Just when we know all the answers they change all the questions!!! Come join with other Commissioners to find out what’s new in Training, Camp, Program, Scout Recognition, Venture, Exploring, Tigers, Webelos, Cubs, Registration, new faces for those we count on for help, and . . . . well, what’s new with you!
111 Commissioner Lifesaving and What Would You Do? - Join the presentation and discussion on situations that are faced by Unit Commissioners. Sets the stage for scenarios for “saving” the unit, tell-tale signs, and situations that present opportunities for us to address.
112 Venture and Venture Advancement – Not up to speed with all the new Venture terminology and advancement program? Come learn from the best what Venture is about, what a Venture Crew consists of and the advancement program detailed.
113 Urban Scouting – Explores the challenges faced by Scouting in a metropolitan area. Discusses the ever-changing metropolitan area, including the single parent family, the ethnic neighborhood, and the diversity of cultural and social-economic backgrounds.
114 Charter Renewal – Proven methods and plans for reregistering Scouting units on time, minimize errors in the rechartering process and how to use the Charter Renewal time to reduce loss of membership and leadership to the unit.
115 Scouting in the LDS Church – Scouting in the LDS church will explore the unique aspects of the Scouting program as implemented by the LDS Church.
Commissioner Forum – Fireside Chat – Provides the opportunity for all to address questions and concerns with District Commissioners and special guests from Connecticut Yankee Council.
